The story of Bisayi is one of resilience and perseverance. Born in the Ntchisi District in Malawi, 17-year-old Bisayi dreamed of going to school since she was a little girl. However, reality was completely different, as she had to eventually drop out to work in the field and help her family make a living.
We interviewed Laura Criado Lafuente, the Deputy Country Director of CARE International in Malawi on gender equality and women empowerment.
Dr. Innocent Mugwagwa, the Executive Director of the ECLT Foundation, highlights the top 5 issues in the business and human rights space might face in 2023, particularly as they relate to child labour. ECLT believes that businesses, civil society, and multi-stakeholder initiatives will have to consider these issues more carefully in 2023 and beyond.

Having been involved in the fight against child labour in agriculture in Africa and other regions of the world since 2000, the ECLT Foundation reiterates its vision for a world with thriving agricultural communities, where children are free of child labour.
The ECLT Foundation, the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) and the Ministry of Public Service, Labour & Social Welfare (MoPSLSW) of Zimbabwe were delighted to host the webinar “Setting up and implementing Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems (CLMRS) in smallholder agriculture”, which took place on November 24 2022.
In October 2022, the ECLT Foundation joined forces with Malawi’s Ministry of Labour in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate in the field of child labour in the agricultural sector.
