2015 was a year of major gains for the ECLT Foundation. Through our work over the past year, the foundation has seen concrete results in our fight against child labour in tobacco growing.
The ECLT Foundation is pleased to announce that Marcus McKay was elected as the new ECLT Foundation Treasurer by the ECLT Foundation Board. The election took place on 6 April 2016 during the 35rd ECLT Foundation Board Meeting in Geneva.
The ECLT Foundation welcomes the recent report by Human Rights Watch, The Harvest is in my Blood, highlighting concerns of child labour in tobacco growing in Indonesia.
The “Quality Education and Skills Development: A Sustainable Way of Eliminating Child Labour in Agriculture” conference was the official launch of the Hoima District Action Plan on Child Labour, a first of its kind not only in Uganda, but throughout the sub-Saharan region, outlining critical inter-sectoral commitments and actions needed at the district level to effectively address the root causes of child labour under the Ugandan National Action Plan to Eliminate the Worst Forms of Child Labour.
In 2016, the ECLT Foundation began implementing a new, seven-year strategic plan, aiming to significantly reduce child labour by 2022 by engaging with every stakeholder in the tobacco-growing supply chain, as each plays a critical role.
The ECLT Foundation's work to progressively eliminate child labour was featured in Tobacco Journal International in their article Tackling Child Labour in Tobacco.
In December 2015, the ECLT Foundation joined members of the Child Labour Platforms as the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Organization of Employers (IOE) launched a new tool for business on child labour.
